Moving into a New Home or Apartment?

Here at Spark Energy, we believe in making your move as seamless as possible. Here are some tips for moving in general, and also some tips for how to deal with transferring your energy provider.

Make sure your move starts with a call to your new utility company a month before you’re ready to go. They’ll give you a new account number for your new home and make sure you’ve got electricity and natural gas when you need it.
Transfer your service: When you call your utility to set up a new account, they will handle the transfer of service for you; or give us a call and we’ll be happy to help. If you’re staying in the same service area, the only thing that will change is your address – you’ll keep the same contract and the same low energy price you’re paying today. If you’re moving to a new service area, you’ll be able to sign up for a new Spark Energy plan without paying an early termination fee on your existing contract. Just make sure and cancel your service at your existing residence before moving.

First, contact Spark Customer Care to see if you are eligible for a transfer of service.

Upon confirming eligibility, if you are a current Spark customer then take care of your move online. There’s no need to call your local utility just log in to your online account and get moving:

  • Transfer your service to a new address.
  • Request a priority move in and get connected within 1-2 business days.
  • Schedule your move up to 30 days in advance.
  • Add a new service address.
  • Update your billing information.

It only takes a few minutes so you’ll move on to the next item on your list in no time.

How to Switch Energy Suppliers

  • Take Advantage of Deregulation

    If you are relocating to a deregulated market, you can choose to sign up with an electricity or gas provider that offers a plan that suits your needs. With deregulation, you can take advantage of suppliers’ discounts, opt for greener energy, and get seasonal price protection. Click here to see a map of the deregulated markets we serve.

  • Give Yourself Time

    Begin coordinating the transfer or switching of your energy provider at least two weeks ahead of your move date. In some instances, you may have to wait for the person vacating the place where you are moving to cancel their power or gas.

  • Do Your Research

    Google the name of the city you are moving to along with the search terms ‘energy supplier’ or ‘utility provider.’ You can also talk with nearby residents or property managers in your new location and ask them who the preferred providers are in the area.

  • Prepare for Upfront Costs

    Depending upon the market you’re moving into, the energy provider you’ve chosen, and the type of energy plan you’ve set your sights on, you may incur a sign-up or transfer fee. Some utility companies will charge a transfer fee that can range from $20 to $50+.Spark Energy does not charge a sign-up fee.

  • Make the Switch

    Once you’ve found the best plan that works for you, you can likely arrange for the transfer or switch to occur online or over the phone. Make the appointment within two weeks of your move, and be sure to call the utility company a few days before your move to confirm the transfer. The company you select will walk you through the entire process to give you a better idea of how they facilitate service transfers.

No. When you select Spark Energy as your electricity provider you will receive one consolidated bill from your local utility. Spark Energy will appear as the electric generation supplier on your bill.

 

Who do I call if there is a problem with my service?

Your electricity will continue to be delivered by your local utility. If you experience any type of outage or emergency, contact your local utility.
