Building a Brighter Future Along Buffalo Bayou
At Spark Energy, we believe success as a business goes beyond providing exceptional service to our customers. Even if you aren’t a Spark customer, it’s our responsibility to help the communities in which we do business. We give our time, money, and energy to multiple charitable partnerships we believe in so all our service areas are empowering places for everyone.
One of the local charities we’re lucky to be able to work with consistently is The Woods Project. We’ve been involved with this fantastic organization since its inception, and we were excited to sponsor and participate in the 2018 edition of their annual 5k walk.
Who is The Woods Project?
Founded in 2016, The Woods Project gives kids from disadvantaged neighborhoods the opportunity to interact with nature and participate in outdoor activities. From after-school clubs and seasonal weekend trips to the annual summer program, the primary goal of these experiences is to help students develop skills and behaviors crucial for success in both the classroom and life.
The Walk for The Woods Project
The Walk for The Woods Project is an event we look forward to sponsoring and participating in each year, and this year’s event was no exception. The 5k Walk is their most important fundraising event of the year, as it brings together student participants, volunteers, community members, and sponsors for a bit of fun, healthy activity in nature.
The Walk itself took place on a beautiful route through the historic East End of Houston, TX, along an underdeveloped area of Buffalo Bayou, which is where many of The Woods Project’s students live. Four stops were placed along the route so that walkers could meet the students who benefit from The Woods Project and learn about their life-changing experiences first-hand.
This year, Spark Energy committed $17,500 to the success of The Walk. Thanks to other generous donors and the efforts of thousands of participants, this year’s event raised over $100,000 for The Woods Project. These funds go directly to The Woods Project’s programs, and they are critical to the organization’s ability to continue serving students each year.
