Helping a Hero 2017

Spark Energy is proud to partner with the Helping a Hero Foundation, an organization that provides specially adapted homes to reintegrate severely wounded war veterans back into their communities. On May 13th, Helping a Hero awarded the keys to Sergeant Daniel Cowart, a Silver Star Army Veteran, and Spark offered the new homeowner free energy for a year.

About Sgt. Daniel Cowart

While out on patrol in Iraq, Sergeant Cowart’s team came across a vehicle with insurgents placing roadside bombs. While trying to stop them, an altercation happened where Sergeant Coward tackled one of the insurgents. Unfortunately, the insurgent had explosives strapped his body and it was set off. As a result, Sergeant Cowart lost his left leg.

Sergeant Cowart received the Silver Star award, which is awarded to a person to anyone in the U.S. Army for gallantry in action against an enemy of the U.S while engaged in military operations. This award is the fourth highest military decoration that can be awarded to a member of any branch of the U.S Armed Forces.

About Helping a Hero

Helping a Hero is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, non-partisan organization, founded in 2006, that provides support for military personnel severely injured in the war on terror. The organization’s principal activity is to provide specially adapted homes for qualifying service members through partnerships made with the builders, developers, communities, and the veteran. Helping a Hero strives to engage the community in providing services and resources for our wounded heroes and their families. Additionally, Helping a Hero provides additional support programs such as marriage retreats, caregiver retreats, recreational activities, emotional support, and financial support.

About the Welcome Home Celebration

Cowart and his family were welcomed home on his 10th Alive Day by over 1,000 supportive neighbors, as well as country music legend Lee Greenwood, who was enthusiastic to show support for Houston’s local hero. The four bedrooms, three baths home is fully wheelchair accessible, with wider doorways and hallways, a roll-in shower, a roll-under sink and an adapted toilet area. Cowart said this gift helps keep his mind positive and press through the challenges. Now, he’s working towards walking on a prosthetic leg, with the hope that he’ll be able to walk his twin daughters down the aisle one day.

Spark Cares

At Spark, we believe energy suppliers can do more than help people reduce money on their power bills. We believe gas and electricity companies should empower the people and the communities they serve. We partner with organizations that:

  • Raise the quality of life for children and military veterans.
  • Make communities better places to live and work.
  • Help people affected by natural disasters at home and across the world.
  • Drive America’s economic future through entrepreneurship education.

We’re proud to provide one deserving veteran each year with free energy services through the Helping a Hero program. When you sign up for our Power for Heroes plan, you can work with us to support vets in need. Learn more about plan offerings in your area by clicking here.
