  • Q: What is the difference between Spark Energy and my current utility provider?

    A: Alternative electricity providers like Spark Energy buy electricity from the people who generate it, then sell that electricity to people and businesses. Your utility’s job includes managing power lines, poles, perform billing services and provide other infrastructure to get the electricity safely and reliably to homes and businesses. If you don’t choose an alternative electricity provider to buy your electricity from, you can buy your electricity from the utility, but you may not be able to get as low a rate as you would if you switched.

  • Q: Why would I buy my electricity or natural gas from Spark Energy instead of the utility?

    A: We use our buying power and expert knowledge of energy markets to purchase electricity and natural gas at very competitive prices and pass any savings on to you.

  • Q: Will I receive two bills once I switch to Spark Energy?

    A: No. You will continue to receive one bill from your utility company as you always have. That bill will include your supply charges from Spark Energy along with the delivery charges from the utility.

  • Q: If I still owe BGE money, do I have to pay them before I can switch?

    A: Yes. You must be up to date with your payments to BGE before you can switch to another electric provider.

  • Q: Can you turn my electricity on or do I have to call the utility company?

    A: To get electricity or gas service with us, you’ll need to get a BGE account number. Once you have your BGE account number, you can sign up with Spark Energy online or by phone at 800.411.4389. As soon as your enrollment is approved, we’ll notify your utility company of the change and take care of the rest.

  • Q: How long does it take for my account to switch to Spark Energy?

    A: It usually takes about 15-45 days to complete the switch to Spark Energy. In the mean time, keep an eye out for the welcome letter and terms of service we’ll send you for your review.

  • Q: Does Spark Energy require a deposit?

    A: No, we don’t require a deposit to switch for residential service.

  • Q: Is there a monthly fee?

    A: Some of our plans may include a small monthly fee which is listed on the products details page. Click here to find out more.

  • Q: Can I still use auto-payments to pay my bill?

    A: Yes. If you’re already using auto-pay with BGE, they will continue to draft your payment each month.

  • Q: Does Spark Energy offer budget billing?

    A: Budget billing is available, but only on the delivery portion of your bill. This is not the portion of your bill that Spark Energy is responsible for. Please contact BGE to find out more about how budget billing works.

  • Q: Will I still be eligible for bill payment assistance programs if I switch to Spark Energy?

    A: We recommend you contact BGE to confirm that bill payment assistance will still be available to you once your switch is complete.

  • Q: If my power goes out, who do I call?

    A:BGE will continue to handle emergencies, outages and downed power lines just like they always have. For these kinds of issues, we recommend calling one of the numbers below.

  • Q: If there is a power outage, will the utility company take care of their customers first and then Spark Energy customers last?

    A: No. BGE is required to handle all customers equally and has no incentive to treat you poorly, even if you’ve selected an alternative energy provider.

  • Q: How do you get your electricity from Texas to my state?

    A: We actually purchase electricity and gas from many sources and arrange to have it transported to your area.

  • Q: Sometimes Spark Energy has a lower rate than the utility company. How is this possible?

    A: As a pioneer in the deregulated energy industry, we have lots of experience buying and selling energy. Our expertise and size allow us to negotiate very competitive prices on energy, and we can pass any savings on to you.

  • Q: What happens after my fixed rate contract expires?

    A: When your contract expires, you can renew by calling us at 800.411.4387 and then selecting the plan you want. Or you can do nothing and you’ll automatically be switched over to a competitive variable rate.

  • Q: Are taxes included in the rate Spark Energy charges?

    A: No. BGE will add any applicable taxes to your bill.

  • Q: Why would someone choose a variable rate over a fixed rate?

    A: Some customers like the flexibility of a month to month variable rate and the savings they can enjoy when rates are low. Others don’t want to worry about whether energy prices are going up or down, and prefer the stability and price protection of a fixed rate.

  • Q: Can Spark Energy put the bill in my name if BGE sends it out under another name?

    A: Because BGE bills all customers, the name on your bill will be the same as the name on your BGE account.
